The problem
The existing pump had seized and the basement took on two inches of water during a spring storm — while the power was out, which would have defeated a standard pump anyway.
How we fixed it
- 01Cleaned out the pit and removed years of silt that had been choking the intake.
- 02Installed a new cast-iron primary pump with a solid check valve and sealed lid.
- 03Added a battery backup pump on a separate float so it runs during outages.
- 04Rerouted the discharge line away from the foundation and tested both pumps under load.
The result
A dry basement through the following storm season, including one overnight outage where the backup carried the load.
